According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), nearly 350,000 residential fires occur each year in the United States.  Along with threatening your home’s structure and contents, residential fires can also be very dangerous for you and your loved ones.  Following are some of the most common causes of house fires, along with tips on how to help prevent them:

  • Cooking – Microwaves, Ovens, Stoves, Fryers, and Toasters all have the potential to catch fire when in use. While cooking in your home, be sure to keep all flammable materials, such as towels, away from hot surfaces.  Never leave your food unattended while cooking, and always check your appliances for residue and build-up before use.
  • Faulty Wiring – Outdated or Frayed wires can pose a significant electrical fire hazard in your home. Always have electrical work done by a trained professional.  Flickering lights, sparks at light switches, or a burning smell may be signs that something is amiss with your wiring; if these occur, turn off power to the affected area and contact an electrician.
  • Use of Open Flame Indoors – Smoking or Burning Candles can easily catch flammable materials on fire if left unattended. Never leave these items burning in an unoccupied room, take care not to fall asleep while smoking or burning candles, and always have a fire extinguisher available in case of emergency.
