Celebrate Labor Day Safely

Many Floridians enjoy celebrating Labor Day with outdoor festivities, such as fireworks, grilling, and watersports. During your celebrations, it is important to keep yourself and loved one safe – especially when it comes to fire! Keep these tips in mind to protect yourself, your property, and your family:
- Give yourself a “safe space” around outdoor flames, including grills, fire pits, or bonfires. Make sure no buildings, foliage, or furniture is within this safe space that could catch fire. Keep pets and children away from outdoor flames, both to reduce the possibility of burn injuries, as well as limit the risk of grills or fire pits being knocked over.
- Always keep a method of extinguishing fires nearby while using outdoor flames. Water hoses, buckets of water, or fire extinguishers are all valuable assets that can be used to control burning.
- Always follow the laws and/or recommendations set forth by local authorities when it comes outdoor flame. Do not burn in areas where prohibited, or when a “burn ban” has been issued.
- If using fireworks, be sure to follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer. NEVER allow children to use fireworks unattended and be sure to only set off fireworks in an open area free of debris.
- Once you have finished your celebrations, make sure that all fireworks, grills, or burning areas are fully extinguished before leaving the area. It only takes a minimal ember to spark a catastrophic fire.
