Incorporate FIRE SAFETY Into Your Memorial Day Celebration!

Memorial Day Weekend marks the “kick-off” of summer in the Florida Panhandle. Barbecues, graduation celebrations, family gatherings, and outdoor activities abound at the end of May. When it comes to celebrating Memorial Day, and all the other festivities during this time of year, it is important to keep safety, especially FIRE SAFETY, in mind! So, what steps can you take to protect yourself, loved ones, and property against fire danger?
- Do not allow children to use fireworks unattended. Many celebrations incorporate fireworks, which can be both fun and entertaining, but must be used according to the instructions provided by the manufacturer, and all firework lighting should be supervised by a responsible adult.
- Practice grilling safety. This includes keeping your grill away from structures and foliage while in use. Make sure the grill is cleaned before lighting to reduce the risk of flare ups. Do not leave a hot grill unattended and keep children and pets away from the grill to reduce the possibility of knocking the grill over, as well as burns.
- Campfires in the celebration plan? Make sure your campfire is built away from anything that can catch fire, including bushes, trees, and tents. Have water and/or a fire extinguisher readily available for your campfire, and make sure the fire is completely out after use. Keep your campfire surrounded by a fire pit or rocks for proper containment and control.
