Most Common Home Fire Hazards

Fire Prevention: this is a topic that we have all been taught about since a young age. From practicing fire evacuation in elementary school, to installing fire extinguishers throughout our businesses as adults, we have all had some kind of experience in the area of fire safety. Another important, and valuable, step that we can take to better understand fire risk, and help protect ourselves and our property, is to analyze the most common fire hazards in our homes, and safeguard against these hazards.
Cooking – Cooking is a leading cause of residential fires. Whether utilizing indoor appliances (stove, countertop fryer, toaster oven), or outdoor methods (grill, smoker), it is imperative to always pay attention to the items in use. Do not leave any flammable materials, such as towels or oven mitts, too close to the heat/flame source. Have a fire extinguisher nearby in case of a flame up, and do not leave children unattended to cook for themselves.
Candles – Much like cooking, it is very important to monitor candles while they are in use. Candles can be easily knocked over, allowing the flame to spread. Keep lit candles away from curtains, draperies, and furniture. Consider using battery powered candles in place of flame lit to reduce the risk of fire.
Heating – While less prevalent in Florida, especially this time of year, utilizing space heaters inside the home can be a fire hazard. Following the manufacturer’s instructions pertaining to electrical supply, placement, and operation is imperative to operating space heaters safely. As with the previously mentioned fire hazards, you should be sure to keep space heaters away from flammable materials and liquids.
Electrical Wiring – Have your electrical wiring inspected by a professional! Do not overload circuits and discontinue use of any electrical cords that have frays, breaks, or melted areas. When it comes to using electrical appliances, make sure children are supervised. To keep yourself and your property safe, it is advantageous, in relation to electrical appliances, to follow the adage “When in doubt, throw it out!” If electrical outlets or appliances begin to smoke or spark while in use, immediately remove the power source to the area by turning off the circuit.
