Homeowners who face the chaos and confusion commonplace after storm, fire, and water damage in Bay County look for a restoration company that offers a wide range of services. Many companies, like ours, highlight their ability to help with insurance claims and submissions during this stressful time as a critical service, streamlining the financial aspects of a restoration job.

Working with the customer's insurance company can be a great benefit to a property owner when done ethically. Unfortunately, there is a long history of disaster recovery companies in Florida mishandling the job- an injustice that can result in adverse consequences unintended by a trusting client.

These unscrupulous businesses prey upon the anxiety and fear victims of severe weather, and other emergencies feel as they try to sort out the overwhelming crush of concerns and tasks following major catastrophes. Within the hours and days after a storm or flood, some vendors deliberately arose panic among victims. They follow up exaggerated statements about the devastation with promises to take care of all aspects of damage restoration if only the customer assigns his or her homeowner's insurance payout directly to the company pledging to fix the damage.

This practice is termed Assignment of Benefits or AOB, and has become of great concern in Florida when pursued dishonestly by disaster recovery companies. The problem stems from the unprincipled actions of dishonest and immoral individuals who inflate the cost of restorations and recommend unnecessary repairs to increase the flow of money into their coffers from unsuspecting customers' insurance carriers. Not infrequently, the vendors that demand a customer sign an AOB also perform low-quality work that does not stand the test of time.

Homeowners trade control over the restoration process and direct communication with their insurance agent and company for a potentially false sense of security. The company assigned the benefits makes all the decisions if an insurance company resists paying. Also, the property owner typically agrees in the AOB documents to cooperate if the restoration company files suit against the insurance company. Because of details in Florida's current AOB statute, insurance companies risk paying significant attorneys fees if claims presented are refused or paid at a lower rate, so they sometimes pay to evade the perceived penalty.

The overreaching effect of the AOB practices of some immoral restoration companies is steep increases in premiums and the unavailability of homeowner insurance coverage in areas where weather damage is predictable. High-pressure tactics to sign AOBs, little history of quality restoration in an area, and fear-mongering are signals that a restoration company is part of the problem, and not the solution you seek.

Why, yes we did!  Beach Care Services, a 501C3 non-profit organization in Panama City Beach, hosts Duck Races every year as one of their three major fundraising events.  SERVPRO of Bay County is a proud sponsor of both this charitable organization, as well as the upcoming Duck Races on August 3^rd, 2021.  So, what exactly are the Duck Races, and how does it work?

This event brings together hundreds of community members, business leaders, first responders, and local celebrities to compete.  Utilizing a roof-top pool at one of our local condominiums, multiple inflatable duck floats, and the determination of the racers, teams compete to see who can finish the relay first!  Along with the races, attendees can enjoy a silent auction, food, drinks, prizes, and a rubber duckie raffle! 

Not only is the Duck Races a fun time for all involved, but the funds raised go to help people who live or work on Panama City Beach by providing emergency assistance in paying rent, utility, medical or grocery bills.  Founded in 1999, the Beach Care Services organization, and multiple volunteers, work diligently to fulfill the needs of the Panama City Beach Community. Because of their hard work, dedication, and passion, Beach Care Services assists between 700-900 individuals and families in need each year.

Nikki when she found out she won tickets to Pepsi's Gulf Coast Jam to see Tim McGraw!

SERVPRO of Bay County is always trying to give back to our community in different ways! So, we wanted to share this story with you that absolutely touched our hearts.

We are a proud sponsor of the Veterans and First Responders luncheon. During the luncheon our Marketing Manager, Talena, gave away Gulf Coast Jam tickets as door prizes. The first winner was in tears when she was given the envelope. Talena asked, “Are you excited?” and she replied, “You have no idea, we have an adult daughter that is paraplegic and wants to see Tim McGraw, and we just can’t afford tickets this year.”

After the luncheon, the Mom called Talena to claim her prize. Talena and the Mom went on to talk about her daughter, Nikki who is 27 years old, born with Cerebral Palsy, and has been in a wheelchair her entire life. Nikki is a major Tim McGraw fan and her obsession started at age seven when she first heard the song, “Don’t Take the Girl.”

At the time, Nikki was away at camp so Nikki was not going to learn about the Gulf Coast Jam tickets until the next Friday. “Make sure you are listening as we are sure we will hear her scream all the way from Altha!” said Mom. She then asked if we were selling tickets and Talena explained our sponsorship opportunity and asked if she needed more tickets. She replied, “Yes, one, because it takes two people to handle her and her wheelchair.”

Without hesitation, Talena told her SERVPRO of Bay County has her third ticket covered.

Blankets of Love

SERVPRO of Bay County giving out blankets of love to Hurricane Michael survivors.

On a cold day in December the SERVPRO family is found handing out green love with some warm blankets and some delicious hot chocolate.    What is all this about you ask? On October 10th, 2018 Hurricane Michael paid a visit to the Florida Panhandle and forever changed the landscape and lives of this coastal community.  That is when the employees of SERVPRO of Bay County jumped into action doing their jobs and working round the clock to accommodate the enormous amount of homes and businesses that desperately needed our help. Our SERVPRO family did not stop there, they were constantly trying to find new ways to help.  A suggestion was made that our group become involved with Hope and Healing.  This event sponsored by City of Panama City and other volunteers was to provide hope through food, clothing and toys for Bay County families. We jumped at the chance to help, and hence the green blankets of love.  Over 1000 families were assisted during this event. Providing love and a little hope to the community we call home. SERVPRO of Bay County employees left feeling they received more than they gave.  Now that's a warm feeling!
