How to Prepare to Keep Your Home Safe During Storm Damage

Storms are dangerous forces of nature that can be brutal, unpredictable, and strike without warning. Because they wreak such serious havoc, it’s important to take measures in keeping your home safe from potential storm damage.

So what can you do to be prepared? For starters, perform a full inspection of your home and its surrounding premises. You can do this personally or professionally. Check for leaks in your roof or windows, and make sure all exterior doors and windows are fitted correctly. Any cracks or gaps can lead to big problems during storms, so it’s important to fix up any you may find right away.

Plan ahead and Prepare for Hurricane Season 2022!

While winter, spring, summer, and fall are the most recognized seasons, there is one more that is all too well known in the Panhandle of Florida, and it is upon us now…Hurricane Season.  Preparing yourself, loved ones, and property for the possibility of gusty winds, damaging rainfall, and potential flooding is very important this time of year.  There are may different steps to be taken for Hurricane Season preparation, and numerous trustworthy resources to guide you through this time of year.

Have an Emergency Kit Ready:  Your hurricane preparedness kit should, at minimum, include at least three days clean drinking water per person, non-perishable food items, flashlight, batteries, radio, first aid items, and necessary medications.  Depending on your specific circumstances (homes with children, homes with pets, etc.) additional supplies may be necessary.  For a more comprehensive and detailed list check out the Ready.gov “Build a Kit” site.

Have an Evacuation Plan in Place: Evacuation can be both stressful and scary.  Having a plan in place ahead of time, that all family members are aware of, can help to reduce this if/when the time comes that evacuation is necessary.  Always follow the guidance of local officials to keep yourself and loved ones safe.  Factors to consider will be the projected direction of the storm, available resources in the area that you will be evacuating to, and your pre-determined evacuation zone rating.  Bay County Florida provides an evacuation zone map for our area here.

Prepare your PETS for stormy weather situations!

Community members throughout the Florida Panhandle are all too familiar with making storm preparations for themselves, their children, and their properties, especially for hurricane season.  When making these preparations, be sure to plan for your PETS in the case of a storm emergency, too!  There are many steps that can be taken to ensure your pets are well taken care of when storms roll through:

• Have your pets microchipped. If you and your pet are unfortunately separated during a storm event, having a microchip with updated contact information is one of the best ways to ensure that you will be reunited.
• Make sure pets are wearing a collar. Just as a microchip can serve as a method of providing contact information, a collar with accurate tags can do the same.  The pet’s name, your contact phone number, and the name of the pet’s veterinary office should all be included. 
• Prepare an emergency kit for each pet. Items that you will want to include are pet food, medications (if applicable), food and water bowls, bottled water, vaccination records, carrier and/or leash, and pet toys.  Make sure this kit is easily accessible in case evacuation is required.
• Identify pet friendly shelters/lodging. When considering evacuation routes and plans, be sure to check for pet friendly locations.  You may want to plan for your pets to stay with a family member or friend outside of the evacuation area, as many shelters do not accept pets. 
• Prepare a “safe space” for your pets inside your home. Many pets experience storm anxiety and may become scared during episodes of loud thunder, heavy rain, or gusty winds.  Have a safe space within your home, such as a kennel, that you pet feels comfortable in.  Provide plenty of blankets and toys in this area when storms arise.

Tornado Talk – What’s the 411?

The Bay County area is no stranger to severe weather.  From heavy downpours on a random Tuesday morning, to large, damaging tropical systems during hurricane season, our area sees more than its fair share of storms.  Along with the heavy winds and rain can sometimes come an even more damaging occurrence: tornadoes.  While many Floridians are very well versed in the specifics of hurricanes, not as many have the same level of knowledge when it comes to tornadoes.  So, let’s talk tornadoes… What’s the 411?

What (exactly) is a Tornado?

Floridadisaster.org defines a tornado as a “violent whirlwind that usually develops in association with a severe thunderstorm.”  Wind speeds within an intense tornado can reach upwards of 200 miles an hour, allowing for extensive damage to be created in the path.  Tornadoes can form over both land and water, and when formed over water are referred to as waterspouts.

Tornadoes are more likely to occur in the Spring and Summer months in Florida, although the possibility does exist throughout the entire year.  Tornadoes generally form along strong sea-breeze boundary conditions (summer) and severe super-cell thunderstorm (spring).  Specifically in Florida, tornadoes are just as likely to occur in the nighttime hours as they are during the day.

Tornado Preparation

Although tornadoes can spawn and travel very quickly, it is important to always have a way to receive weather alerts and follow the guidance provided by local authorities.  Have a designated safe room: an area centrally located within your home and away from windows.  Shelter on the lowest level of the structure you are within if you are in the forecasted impact area.

After a Tornado

If a tornado has impacted your local area, think safety first!  Avoid downed power lines, stay out of damaged buildings, and watch for hazards such as broken glass.  Continue to follow the direction of local authorities in the area.

Hurricane Season is Here! Are you Prepared?

Just two days ago, The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) released their annual mid-season update for Hurricane Season 2021.  Their findings indicate that an above average hurricane season is likely, as we have seen for the past couple of years.  With this information, it is extremely important for residents of Bay County, and surrounding areas in Northwest Florida, to make sure they are prepared for the possibility of tropical activity in our area over the next couple of months.  Some of the most important storm season preparedness tips include:

• Have an emergency kit built, including water, food, medications, flashlights, batteries, children’s and/or pet supplies (if applicable), and a battery or crank operated radio to receive weather alerts.
• Plan your evacuation route: it is important to always follow the guidance of local and state officials as it pertains to dangerous weather.  Knowing your evacuation route, planning for a place to stay in case of evacuation, and gathering the supplies needed for evacuation are all critical steps to this process.
• Protect your property: Clearing out loose debris, cleaning out rain gutters, and installing storm shutters are a few of the many possible activities you can do ahead of a storm to help protect your property from damage. Look over your insurance policy and make sure you have the proper coverage in place, such as flood insurance, before a tropical system makes landfall.

Weather 101: Watches vs. Warnings, What’s the Difference?

Residents and business owners in Bay County, Florida are no stranger to unsettled weather.  Pop-up thunderstorms are a common summer occurrence, and can sometimes produce unexpected amounts of rainwater, wind, or lightning.  Along with these weather conditions often come watches and warnings, whether for flood, tornado, or other condition.  We’ve all heard about them, but what is the true difference between the two?

Watches

When a “watch” is issued, the issuing authority is telling you to Be Prepared!  Severe conditions (whether flood, tornado, thunderstorm, etc.) are possible in and near the watch area.  When a watch is in effect, you will need to stay informed and be ready to act if a “warning” gets issued.  The watch area is typically large, covering a more widespread geographical area.

Warnings

When a “warning” is issued, the issuing authority is telling you to Take Action!  Severe weather has been reported by spotters or indicated by radar.  Warnings indicate imminent danger to property or life, and when a warning is in effect, you will need to seek shelter until the weather has passed.  Warnings typically encompass a much smaller geographical area that may be impacted directly by severe weather conditions.

Understanding Tropical Systems

The Panhandle of Florida is no stranger to tropical depressions, tropical storms, and hurricanes.  The landfall of Hurricane Michael in our area in 2018 brought a great deal of property damage, both from rain and wind, and reminded us all how important it is to be both weather aware and prepared.  With the likelihood of tropical systems affecting our community, it is important to understand the different categories of these storms.  The National Hurricane Center defines each type of tropical system as follows:

• Tropical Depression: A tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 38 mph or less.
• Tropical Storm: A tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 39 to 73 mph.
• Hurricane: A tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 74 mph or higher.

Hurricanes are further ranked by intensity on what is known as the Sariff-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale:

• Category 1: 74-95 MPH sustained winds. 
• Category 2: 96-110 MPH sustained winds.
• Category 3: 111-129 MPH sustained winds.
• Category 4: 130-156 MPH sustained winds.
• Category 5: 157 of higher MPH sustained winds.

What Causes a Thunderstorm?

Panama City, Panama City Beach, and the surrounding communities in Bay County, Florida are no strangers to thunderstorms.  Our area is prone to quick changes in weather conditions, sometimes severe, and with little warning.  Since thunderstorms are such a frequent occurrence on the Gulf Coast, and can cause damages to your home or business, it is important to understand what causes thunderstorms, and how to be better prepared for them.

Thunderstorms- What Causes Them?

According to the National Severe Storms Laboratory, three basic ingredients are required for a thunderstorm to form:

1. Moisture
2. Rising, Unstable Air
3. A Lifting Mechanism

The process of thunderstorm formation begins with the sun heating the surface of the Earth.  This, in turn, heats the air just above the Earth’s surface.  Because warm air is less dense than cool air, warm air will begin to rise.  As this rising warm air interacts with various elements of the Earth’s surface terrain (hills, mountains, or pockets of cooler air) it continues to be pushed higher into the atmosphere.  As this air reaches the cooler areas of the atmosphere, it also begins to cool, allowing the moisture contained within to condense, beginning cloud formation.  As more particles of continuously cooling moisture gather, they begin to “bounce off of” one another within the cloud.  These collisions eventually build up large reactions of electric charge, resulting in lightning, which creates the soundwave we know as thunder.

Thunderstorms – How to Prepare?

Thunderstorms are most likely to occur in spring and summer months, when the surface of the Earth reaches higher temperatures, but can take place at any time of the year.  In the Gulf Coast region, these storms occur most frequently in the afternoon.  Knowing this, here are a few tips for thunderstorm preparation:

1. Keep you roof gutters cleared, especially in the spring and summer months. Debris in gutters can cause rainwater to back up onto your roof, which can result in property damage.
2. Follow your local weather forecast. Although many thunderstorms can occur quickly, it is important to be weather aware when living in a region prone to thunderstorms.
3. Since lighting is one of the most dangerous components of a thunderstorm, be sure to practice lightning safety: during a thunderstorm, stay away from windows and doors, avoid using electronic devices that are connected to the wall, and avoid using plumbing, as metal pipes can conduct electricity.

Flooding is defined as “an overflowing of water onto land that is normally dry.”  Flooding can be caused by a multitude of different occurrences, the two experienced most frequently in the Florida Panhandle being tropical systems and heavy thunderstorms.  Floods are the most common and widespread of all weather-related natural disasters, therefore it is important to understand the different types of flooding possible in your area.

River Flood – a river flood occurs when water rises over the top of a riverbank.  This can immediately affect structures located near the river, and if water levels continue to rise, affect homes and businesses downstream.

Coastal Flood – a coastal flood occurs when land areas along the coast are inundated with rising waters.  A combination of factors, including tidal patterns, rainfall, and land elevation can all play a role in coastal flooding issues. 

Storm Surge – Storm surge is a variation of coastal flooding in which the wind, atmospheric pressure, and waves of a severe storm greatly increase the water level in coastal areas.  Highly common during hurricanes, storm surge can occur very quickly, and pose serious property and safety concerns.

Flash Flood – a flash flood is usually caused by heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period of time.  Flash floods can occur with very little warning and be extremely dangerous.  Clogged draining systems and standing debris can contribute to the likelihood of flash flooding occurrences.

September is National Preparedness Month

National Preparedness Month is recognized every September to promote community disaster planning, with the theme for 2020 being “Disasters Don’t Wait.  Make Your Plan Today.”  With the end of August growing near, an extremely active hurricane season taking place, and extra preparations and precautions made necessary by COVID-19, preparing yourself, your loved ones, and your property for a disaster situation is of the upmost importance.  Ready.gov offers weekly National Preparedness Month themes to help organize your preparations:

Week 1 (September 1^st-5^th): Make a Plan

Determine lines of communication, designated meeting places in case of separation, and responsibilities for each member of your household.  Depending on the needs of your family, you may require additional planning steps.

Week 2 (September 6^th-12^th): Build a Kit

Gather supplies for each member of your family.  You kit may include food, clean water, medications, pet foods, communication devices, and batteries.  Keep your kit as compact as possible, and in an easily accessible location, in case evacuation becomes necessary.

Week 3 (September 13^th-19^th): Prepare for Disaster

In the Panhandle of Florida, one of the most common disasters you may face is a hurricane.  To prepare for such an event, be sure to follow local and national news as it pertains to hurricane tracking, check your insurance coverage, and make sure your disaster preparedness kit is built. If a storm is forecasted to hit in your area, follow the direction of local officials concerning shelter and evacuation orders.

Week 4 (September 20^th-26^th): Teach Youth About Preparedness

Make sure children’s needs are included in your preparations.  Include their items in your disaster kit, talk with them about protocols and procedures in the event of a disaster situation, and answer any questions they may have.

Hurricane Preparedness week is May 4^th – May 9^th, with hurricane season officially beginning on June 1^st.  Living in the Florida Panhandle, being prepared for a hurricane is of the upmost importance for the safety of you and your loved ones.  The National Weather Service offers a comprehensive web page with details on how to prepare for hurricane season, as well as hurricane safety and evacuation information.

Creating and maintaining a hurricane supply kit is one of the most frequently recommended preparedness steps you can take.  According to Ready.gov, the following supplies are recommended for your hurricane preparedness kit:

• Water- one gallon per person, per day, for at least 3 days
• Food- at least a 3-day supply of non-perishable food
• Battery powered or hand crank radio
• Flashlight
• First Aid Kit
• Be sure to determine beforehand the size batteries needed for your radio and flashlight(s) and have plenty available.
• Manual Can Opener
• Local Maps
• Prescription Medications
• Cash or Traveler’s Checks

Safety During a Flooding Event

Storms can create a multitude of dangerous and costly conditions, such as hail, tornadoes, and flooding.  Especially in the lower lying areas of Florida, flash flooding and storm surge can be a threat to both property and personal safety.  In order to stay safe during a flooding event, it is important to adhere to the following guidelines:

• Never drive into flood waters. Water can be much deeper than originally anticipated, and flood waters can easily overturn or wash away a car.
• Never drink, bathe, or cook with flood water. Soil, dirt, and bacterial contaminants can exist in flood waters, making them unsafe for consumption.
• Find the highest ground possible during a flood. Flood waters can move very quickly, and depth of water can increase dramatically in a matter of minutes.  If evacuation is not possible, then search for an area that is above the flooding area.
• If you have evacuated, do not return to a flooded area until directed by local authorities. Flood waters can remain for days after a storm event, posing multiple safety and structural risks.

During a thunderstorm or severe weather event, lighting can be a very dangerous situation for you and your loved ones.  According to the National Weather Service, there is a great deal of information to be aware of, and many precautions that you can take, to help protect yourself from being struck by lightning:

Lightning- What you Need to Know:

1. If you hear thunder, lightning is close enough to strike you.
2. If you hear thunder, move to an enclosed space, such as building or metal topped vehicle for shelter: no place outside is safe during a thunderstorm.

Lightning Safety Once Indoors:

1. Stay off electronic equipment, such as computers or corded phones, that put you in direct contact with electricity.
2. Avoid plumbing, such as sinks and bathtubs, as metal piping can transmit electrical current.
3. Stay away from windows and doors; the safest area of the building is an interior room.
4. Do not lean against concrete walls or lie on concrete floors.

Lightning Strike Outdoor Risk Reduction Tips:

If you find yourself outside with no shelter option during a lighting storm, the following actions can help reduce the risk of injury from a lightning strike:

1. Search for lower ground- Avoid hills, cliffs, mountains, or any other natural structure elevates you.
2. Immediately get out of and away from all bodies of water.
3. Stay away from objects that can easily conduct electricity, such as metal fences and power lines.
4. Never seek shelter under an isolated tree, as the tree can serve as a conductor for a lightning bolt.

Michael Brings Mold

SERVPRO of Bay County to the resuce! Mold located at a local financial institute in Bay County Florida

Bay County along with several surrounding counties still recovering from Hurricane Michael are now dealing with yet another hit, Mold! 

Leave water and organic matter alone together in the right environment and you get an unwelcomed guest.  Mold growth causes many challenges and needs to be taken care of as soon as possible to avoid further damage to your home.  If you suspect mold in your home, it is recommended to call for an air quality test that will let you know if you indeed have mold.  This inspection is required by most insurance companies before any mold remediation can take place.  This test along with a post-test will give you the assurance that the mold has been reduced to normal levels.

SERVPRO of Bay County comes in after the pre-test is done to contain, clean and tear out if necessary, using industries standards.  Once cleaning is done, and the post-test preformed you are then ready to build back if any tear out was required. 

Even though these last four months have been filled with challenges we face them together and a little mold won’t slow us down.

Aftermath of Michael

Looking around Bay County three months after the storm of a lifetime still looks like a war zone.  Although to those of us that live here, it is far less brutal than three months ago. However, it is still a reminder of just how lucky we are to have survived. 

As a franchise, we are still in high gear helping our neighbors overcome the challenges that come with a storm this size, but it has put our own needs on hold.  Before the storm SERVPRO of Bay County was in the process of moving to a new building that would house community educational programs as well as our growing staff.  Like many others, we found ourselves with a completely demolished building that had to be completely rebuilt.  We are still conducting business in tents, trailers and out of our cars.  You would think that this would wreak havoc on our morale but just the contrary,  the troops pulled together and are stronger than ever. 

We look today at an almost complete, shiny, new building ready for the eagerly awaiting people that are proud to call themselves SERVPRO Soldiers.  They are still fighting the good fight to get our community back to “Like it never even happened."

As anyone who lives here knows, springtime in Bay County brings beautiful sunshine as well as strong rain and wind storms. With weather that can switch so quickly between the two, it’s important to make sure your home is storm-ready, prepared to handle and withstand unpredictable conditions.

It’s always a good idea to conduct a home and ground inspection before weather conditions take a turn for the worst. Things like leaky roofs or windows can be very problematic in the midst of heavy rainfall and strong winds, so checking them and making sure they are all fitted correctly is a critical step to take.

Checking for loose shutters and trimming back any trees or shrubbery that may be surrounding your home is another good way to get it storm-ready. Shutters, tree limbs, and other loose debris can get picked up by wind and thrown in any direction, including towards your house. Also inspect any drainage areas near or around your home, clearing them of any debris that may be creating blockage. This will help reduce chances of flooding your property during a storm.

Another thing to consider when preparing your home for a storm is what kind of system to have in place that will allow you to communicate with your loved ones and receive weather updates. In some cases, storms can become strong enough to put your cell phone’s service signal at risk, so it’s good to be prepared and have an alternative form of communication in place.

So what can you do to be prepared? For starters, perform a full inspection of your home and its surrounding premises. You can do this personally or professionally. Check for leaks in your roof or windows, and make sure all exterior doors and windows are fitted correctly. Cleaning Your Gutters After A Storm

While Bay County, Florida experiences its fair share of sunny days throughout the year, it also brings the occasional rainstorm. By dumping a high volume of water in a relatively short amount of time, it’s important to take precautionary measures to prevent any damage being done to your home from these storms.

One measure you can take is cleaning out your home’s gutters after a storm hits, and you can do it in three easy steps:

First, start by scooping out debris.Find a ladder and securely place it against your home so you are able to reach the gutters comfortably. Start at the end closest to the drain outlet and gradually working your way to the other end, removing loose debris as you go.

Second, use a hose to spray a steady stream of water through the gutters towards the drain outlet. This will help remove and stubborn dirt and debris that may still be holding on from when you were scooping.

Third, be sure to check your drain pipes for any blockage. In some instances, rainstorms can force material into the pipes, causing potentially severe damage. A good way to detect if your drain pipes are blocked is if you see a trickle of water rather than a flow coming from them. If this is the case, try using a hose at the top of the gutter and spray directly into the outlet to help clear any congestion.

Have A Healthy Roof

The best protection for your home in stormy weather conditions is your roof – think of it as your first line of defense. Make sure your roof is in good condition by looking for things like loose shingles, surface divots, soft spots, and cracks. Roofs that exhibit any of these can cause leaks, leading to potentially serious internal damage on your walls on ceiling. If you don’t see any problems with your roof but are still wondering if it’s up to standards, it never hurts to call a professional to come out and give it an inspection.  

Inspect Your Gutters

Having well running gutters in place can be critical when experiencing heavy rainfall. Gutters help keep water off your home’s walls, so it’s important to keep them clean and clear of debris.

Flooding in Louisiana.

Florida is accustomed to hurricanes wreaking havoc on our beautiful beaches and cities and so is our neighbor Louisiana.  But, when a recent rain event caused almost as much damage as Hurricane Katrina did in 2015 we were caught by surprise.  SERVPRO of Bay County dispatched several teams to assist our Louisiana counterparts  in the aftermath of this unusual rain event the likes not seen in over 40 years.  “We saw the need and we made the call to go assist, that’s just what we do” said Sean Grier, owner of SERVPRO of Bay County.  “Our employees were all on board from the start.  We currently have a crew helping on the residential level to get people back in their homes as fast as possible.  It’s times like these that make being a part of the SERVPRO family a source of honor and pride. Helping people in need makes coming to work every day meaningful” said Grier. 

Louisiana has a long cleanup ahead, but they are a strong state and with the support of many organizations and businesses I have no doubt they will be back as strong as ever!  SERVPRO was just happy to help in some small way.
